My last DC did this.
It would have a BSOD (black screen of death) .. as if it switched off, but the light was still on.

I repeatedly hit it till it worked LOL (not reccomended Very Happy) my wall actually has dents in where i 'fixed' my DC..... LOLOL

I would just buy a new DC if this problem persists.

What you can do is get a Q-Tip, lightly soak it in rubbing alcohal and clean the CD reader, then wipe it with the other side. This usually improves FPS and gets it reading if that was your problem.

Yeah, before you go about replacing the GD-ROM and what not, try using rubbing alcohol with a Q-tip. Lightly and carefully clan the lens, stoking up and down and not pressing hard down. Give some time to dry and it might work. I have heard Windex works better, but i never tried that.

My DC completly stopped reading tings and I thought it was broke. I cleaned it and it worked like new.

it could be down to a number of things.

if you play copied music cd's or lots of homebrew games from cdr's

or if the dreamcast has been left on with the game still playing for a number of hours as it resets itself to the main menu then it will boot again and it will do this untill the laser breaks ...... well thats what my 3rd one did and 1st and 2nd ones lol
