I recently bought the Japanese version of DOA 2 because it has bonus features not found in the US version. Dead or Alive 2 was not released in Japan until after the US version, so to make up for it they added extra features in the NTSC-J version of DOA2. There are some new stages, moves, + more. Check out the following list:

JP version of DOA2 has:
73 costumes, vs the US's 33
Bayman and Tengu as unlockable characters.
Extra breaks in "The Dragon Hills" stage
2 brand new stages: The Burai Zenin & The L's Castle
4 extra modes:
-Sparring (tag battle)
-Watch
-UPS (User Profile System)
-Internet (webpage / rankings)
New dialogue differences
Tons more cutscene animations
Kasumi's default hairstyle is in a high ponytail instead of a low braid
CG Gallery Unlockables

As you can see there is a huge difference between the US version and the Japanese version of DOA2. The game has tons of new stuff, and is almost like a DOA 2.2 of sorts.

The striking difference with the Limited Edition version is its full color art GD-ROM. The disc features a full color artshot rather than a monochromatic print.

Well the US version has sparring mode as well, but the JPN version has tag battle sparring.

I think the PAL and US versions are the same.

Was it released later than the US version? If not, why did the people across the pond get snubbed? I've seen this issue often brought up in stateside reviews of the game. Still, DOA2 was my premier Dreamcast multiplayer game right there with Power Stone 2.

It was the Japanese that got snubbed. They had to wait forever to get DOA2 on the DC.

lordnikon, awesome find, and excellent breakdown of the additional features. Did you pick up the ubiquitous LE of DOA2 JP, or the oddly harder-to-find original version (with only Kasumi on the cover)?

I have the LE, and although both of the games are identical, I'm wondering if it's only the LE that has the full-color disc artwork. I agree however that it's very nice. Cool

Oh, wait, I see that you must've gotten the LE. Nevermind that.

Personally, I'm extremely happy with the JP version for the added stages and outfits. The game is fun no matter what, and some of the added costumes aren't much to write home about, but they're definitely nice to have. I still have yet to put the time into unlocking all of them. The new modes are excellent as well, although one of the things that I was hoping for was additional tag team stages. I played the PS2 "DOA2: Hardcore" a bit way back, but while there are some interesting visual effects (with colors and such), it has "jaggies up the wazoo" if I recall correctly. It also had three or so tag team stages, but in actuality, the default one ("Danger Zone"?) was pretty much the best, and that's the one on the DC anyway. The others felt weird, or sort of "tacked-on."

I hadn't noticed that "User Profile System" though, I should check that out.

Yea I bought the LE version. I really wanted that full color disc. Is the original version really harder to find? I will have to do some snooping around.

It's even more humorous when you hear it on DOA2 for the PS2, which had American voice acting. Yikes.

DOA2 is my favorite fighter for the DC, simply because of its awesome use of counter. Secondly, the fact that visually the game hasn't evolved much superficially from DOA2 to DOA4 is pretty telling.

I definitely agree with you, Pakkitman, on the incredible build DOA2 is on DC. That game is one of my favorite fighters on DC.

I bought DOA2: Hardcore on PS2 in order to try the expanded costumes, stages, and animations offered by the Japanese LE version. Unfortunately, I couldn't stand the large amount of jaggies on the PS2 version, so I quickly switched back to my US Dreamcast version.

Nikon, thank you for breaking down the content of the Japanese Dreamcast version. I never could find a definitive list of what the differences were. I may have to resume my search for the Japanese LE version.

Don't forget the quick flash of nudity in the intro cutscene of the LE that was censored when it was released in the US.

The extra costumes are awesome, and Bayman is a lot of fun to play as. I'm glad I imported instead of getting a domestic DOA2. I haven't really used the UPS system since I don't really know how it works (it's all in Japanese), but it sounds cool.
