Hello all, i've recently got myself a nice HDTV and I want to know something about the VGA box, does it let you output your DC to your monitor AND S-video to your tv? See, I really only want it for s-video on my tv, but I wasn't sure if it's better quality than the actually S-video cable itself, if anyone can clarify on which I should buy i'd greatly appreciate it.

Once again, i'm using this for my TV through S-Video.

Thanks,

-Rob.

Most VGA boxes also contain an S-Video output (as well as stereo audio RCA jacks), so yes, you can typically connect both ways with one device. If you ever want to use the VGA output from the same Dreamcast, I would suggest getting the VGA adapter over the S-Video cable. That way, you can save a little time and wear changing cable setups.

Also, I'm not sure what sort of TV you purchased, but several HDTVs on the market today accept a VGA input. There are some compatibility issues, but some of them can display a Dreamcast in VGA mode. Anyway, If you ever want the ability to use VGA, I would suggest getting a VGA box with S-Video output. They don't cost that much these days.

That's, funny. I have the same gameplan myself. Wink

Some sets that have VGA inputs will not display a native resolution as low as the standard VGA resolution of 640x480. Definitely see if you can test the set you're planning on getting before you buy it. Most stores will allow you to do this. You don't want to have the set delivered and set up on ly to find out it is incompatible with your VGA setup.

Just a word of caution.

Along these lines, what are the code words to look for when buying hdtv's that have vga input? In other words, if I see the words "VGA input," does that mean it will accept the VGA cable?

I ask because I'm looking for HDTV's on ebay.

Thanks!

With your kind of setup I really don't understand why you'd choose s-video over VGA. But to answer your question, you will still need to purchase s-video cables if you intend to use this via a VGA box. The only difference is, that you can opt for the high end ones like monster cables which should, in theory offer superior quality over the standard s-video cables.
