How to Dual-Boot Windows 98 and Windows XP
The Catch to doing this is that you have to install windows 98 first before XP because 98 writes over the boot.ini file during instalation that your computer needs to dual boot. You will also loose anything on your hardrive gUIDE IS FOR 1 HARDDRIVE First thing to do is make the primary partition on your Harddrive, this is where 98 will be. insert windows 98 in your cd-rom restart, boot from cd/dvd select start computer with cd-rom support type d: then press enter (d:=your cd-rom) type fdisk then press enter delete any partitions create primary DOS partition (where 98 will be) when it asks if you wish to make partition as big as possible and make it active select NO choose size of partition (at least 2 gigs) create extended DOS partition (where XP will be) make them both active exit fdisk, restart Start 98 setup from CD Install 98 as you normally would to C:/ after insatllation restart and insert XP disc boot from cd/dvd install XP to D:/ drive the file system on 98 is most likely FAT32 so if you want to access files from XP on 98 then choose the file system as FAT32 aswell after installation you will notice the boot options menue when you restart XP will autoboot if no option is selected Specifying the Default Operating System for Startup when you have more than one operating system on your computer, you can set the operating system that you want to use as the default one for when you start your computer: Start Windows XP Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System. On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to start when you turn on or restart your computer. Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically. To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Windows 98 will just show up as WINDOWS in the boot selection option at startup unless you change it to somthing else (eg. Windows 98 SE) so insert a new line at the bottom of the boot.ini file and type C:\=Windows 98 SE but Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable. |

Strange. I have a Windows 98 SE CD-ROM, but I remember my computers being unable to boot from it, even though they could boot from my Windows 2000 Professional disc. I'll have to try booting from the CD-ROM again. | ||||
