Yes, it was online feature. Server was down a few years ago Rolling Eyes. http://dricas.sonicretro.org/sonic2/ - backup of their official SA2 homepage. Unfortunately, it was not so useful. But it had very good thing: downloadable chaos, which were accessable only via built-in SA2 browser. http://dricas.sonicretro.org/sonic2/ja/index.html and http://dricas.sonicretro.org/sonic2/en/chao/blackmarket.html - it is quite interesting. You couldn't have it without Internet connection, there are online exclusive features. But you can try to find save with chaos unlocked.

Shouldn't you be able to unlock the browser (http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/phpBB2/guides_browserext.php) and then navigate to that backup site to use the black market?

I would try, but I don't have a dial-up connection at the moment. I was able to unlock the browser though.

[ Moved this to Past Online for relevance. ]

While that site is a backup (I have a backup also), it does not contain the actual scripts that made the blackmarket work. Script files like those in CGI at the time ran on the server from protected directories and could not be salvaged.

Well, I just checked and the CGI scripts are still there, but not in the sonicretro dump but in the original sonic team website subdomain for sa2 stuff (tails03.sonicteam.com) , and they still work.

There are even some pages hosted in their website.
And it works right up until the last part of downloading a chao file, the files aren't there but the scripts are.

I haven't tried uploading a chao but that *might* still work, you can still check all of the daycare entries. The last ones being added in 2008. I might try to check if a new one can be uploaded.

http://tails03.sonicteam.com/cgi-bin/daycare/main.cgi
http://tails03.sonicteam.com/cgi-bin/blackmarket/main.cgi
http://tails03.sonicteam.com/cgi-bin/

So the scripts can STILL be salvaged *wink*

Unfortunately what is not there anymore are the chao files for the blackmarket nor daycare.
Still a replicated site with those scripts could be made.

Yea you would have to hack the server to get at those CGI files.

Considering it runs under 2001 specifications, and 2001 cgi scripts there are quite a lot of exploits that could be used...

Well I'll leave that up to who ever would want to undertake such a task, but its such a lofty expectation that anyone would actually hack into the web server and gain file access to pull down the CGI files. This is venturing into dark territory, as it strays too close the forum rule on online game restoration topics.

Back in the day people without internet didn't download anything. The only way people without internet got anything was when they brought their VMU to school, and trade data with friends.

This is a rather important perspective that many people today may not realize Wink

The internet was not as prevelant back in 1999. Dialup was the majority, VOIP services like Vonage were non-existant, and not many people were ditching their landline phones for cellphones. With people needing to recieve calls, even if you had dialup ISP access, family members would be on your case to stay off the phone line.

I sure wish I could have swapped files via connecting VMU's back then. That would have been cool. Wink

If I had a quarter every time I got yelled at to get off the phone line when I was younger, I'd be like Scrooge McDuck! Laughing

I swapped some SA1 stuff with a kid down the street back when I was in 5th grade. I believe we swapped Chaos or I gave him an event file since he didn't have internet in his basement.
