you know, the 4 icons at the top of the VMU screen. what do they mean?
I'm pretty sure that the one on the far left means the VMU is being written to when it's lit up. other than that, I have no idea what the other 3 mean

One's to look at you're saved data, the middle is to play games, and the last is the clock.

First you need a game that has downloadable mini game on it the ones that I recall are
Sonic Adventure
Zombie Revenge
Skies of Arcadia
and I think Time Stalker and Sega GT have some games
first you need to check check if you have enough room for the minigame on the Vmu then you download the game into the vmu ( be sure you have a working battery in the vmu ) most of the minigames let you add to your regular game.

And you also need to make sure that your VMU doesn't have a dead battery. (You can get a new set at any radio shack or clock shop. Just take in your old batteries so they know which size).

VMUs rape batteries.

No joke.

so the VMU can save and load whether it has a dead battery or not?

also, can you turn it on by itself, or do you have to launch the VMU mini game from the Dreamcast itself?

if you can turn it on by itself, how?

yes it can be turned on by itself , infact thats the only way to play vmu minigames on the games that I have

if you have a working battery press the " sleep" button to wake it up press and hold to turn it off. after turning it on select the playing the playing cards to play the game you loaded to the vmu .
