SAN JOSE -- Renesas Technology has taken many of the technologies used in the Sega Dreamcast game console and combined them into a single core.
Officials from Japan's Renesas, which assumed control over the development of the SH processor from ST Microelectronics on Sept. 28, announced the SH3707 embedded processor at the Fall Processor Forum here today. The SH3707 combines both an advanced SuperH core and a PowerVR graphics core, the components found in the original Dreamcast. Specifically, the Dreamcast console contained a 200-MHz Hitachi SH4 with the capability to perform 360 million instructions per second (MIPS) and 1.4 million megaflops, or floating-point operations per second. The Dreamcast also contained an NEC PowerVR2 graphics chip. The new SH3707 uses a faster 540 MIPS/2.1 gigaflops engine, with a 64-bit interface to memory. The core also contains a PowerVR MBX chip, a core that Imagination Technologies has licensed to Intel and Texas Instruments, among others. Sega's decision to exit the console business in 2001 was met with dismay with gamers, who admired the system's graphics capabilities. However, the console's sales slipped after rival Sony released the PS2 in the U.S., Microsoft announced plans for the Xbox, and Nintendo launched the Gameboy Advance, providing another outlet for gamer dollars. Even today, the console is actively traded on sites like eBay. Renesas officials said they actually designed the chip with game consoles or other entertainment devices in mind, although they didn't announce any customers for the chip. "Our goal was to accomplish second-generation (console) performance and first-generation cost," said Mitsuhiro Miyazaki, the project deputy manager for Renesas, based in Tokyo. According to Miyazaki, the target specification for the platform is to achieve up to 1024 x 768 resolution, 10 million to 13 million vertices or 5 million to 6 million triangles per second, with up to 20 percent translucency per scene – in other words, anticipating a game where some of the polygons would be enhanced with transparency effects. That would place the SH3707 at somewhat over twice the performance of the Dreamcast, which could handle up to 3 million triangles per second. The SH3707 also has the capability of processing MPEG-1, -2, and -4 video and eight-channel PCM/ADCPM audio. The SH3707 will ship in the first quarter of 2005, Miyazaki said. (I hope this means we will be getting a re-release of the DC like they did with genesis, game gear , saturn) http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1667689,00.asp |

I don't understand exactly what this means (although I did just get up, and, no, I still did not get enough sleep).
Are they saying that they've developed this "DC on a chip" so that another console could use it to boost its own performance, or, are they saying that it itself will be the center of a new console? And, with regard to that; When they say that it'll ship in the first quarter of 2005, does that mean that it'll be shipped to potential game console developers, or, simply that it'll be ready? I suppose that these questions will be answered in due time, making this a nul post, but, it's very interesting... It's also somewhat strange to hear people speaking about the DC in such a common fashion (at least, outside of enthusiast sites and forums). Here's hoping that "second generation performance at first generation cost" catches wind at Sega, and they decide to do something with this. Chances are good that they won't, but, it's a nice dream... (Excuse any typographical errors, please... I can't see the screen very well. ) |

according to the article, basically what they have done is managed to integrate some of the primary dreamcast hardware chipsets into a single processor. the article mentions that they don't have any customers yet (excuse me, they "haven't announced any customers yet"), which means that although they have finished the design process for this chip and the chip will be available to any designers that want it, no one has stepped up and said "w00t! we'll make a new console using it!".
so it's very, very cool, but as of right this second doesn't mean much of anything to us except that there are still people out there championing this fine piece of hardware. the article also mentions that they've managed to improve the chipset over the original DC hardware, too. sounds pretty sweet, no lie. we'll all just have to keep our fingers crossed that a) someone who is in the position to make and manufacture consoles or other consumer electronics takes notice and wants to use Renesas Technology's chipset AND b) that either they or we (the world at large) find a way to make this new chipset play existing dreamcast software. promising stuff! thanks for the link and the heads-up, SINNED. |

Seriously guys, quite axing Nokia and their N-gage. Dont you remember that Dreamcast went through the exact same scrutiny years ago? The public didnt even try it, they just said it sucked and waited for an unfulfilling PS2.

(plays cheesy horror music in background) Otherwise known as: And xdscast, what's different about how people destroyed the N-Gage and the Dreamcast with negative hype is that the N-Gage actually sucked. Every feature it has is a major pain in the ass and the game collection is nothing but a bunch of crappy old ports of games we actually don't want to see again. Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, there is not a single "original" game made exclusively for the N-Gage. It's all ports. Badly ported ports of games that are -still- widely availiable. It's not like Nintendo bringing back their classics which are on systems that are no longer on retail. Just PS1 and Gameboy games, and none of those could be considered classics. Well, maybe Pandemonium, but the N-Gage made me sad about that too. I want a portable Dreamcast though. That'd be cool. SHENMUE ON DAH GO! |

MK its called a Treamcast , and ya the Ngage does have quite a few (I say that liberally) original titles. I think all the Ngage trashing is simply because the gaming community doesn't like it generally speaking, but there is a point to all the trashing it does get, similar to what the Dreamcast got and still does get. Also similar is ppl trash both systems when they have not even played on them.
I will not call it trash like many graphic whores do because its made to be a cell phone that can play soup'ed up cell phone games and some very limited 3D titles that is targeted at a nitch. Older mature ppl who like to have tons of features on their cell. This is not to say that I think the games are any good, so far its sadly gotten a ton of bad games for it but the future looks good for it and its getting finally some solid games, and ones that do take full advantage of its wireless functions. |

i remember playing one at target, it took like 10 secs to load up the power, and the original versions required you to take out the battery and then put the game in.
