If your DC dies, just take your mainboard and place it into an other DC.

Or you can replace the parts which are broken.

It's easy.

Forgive my n00bness, but why would a console that's taken well care of just die? Honestly, I still have a 12 year old SNES that works like the day I bought it, yet my 2 other DCs died within a year of regular use and were well taken care of... /sigh

Cartridge-based systems have far less moving parts and generate far less heat. There are no motors. A common problem with Dreamcast is that the motor that drives the laser motion will burn out eventually. There's also another common problem that's been discussed here where the pins connecting the power supply internally start to "sag" and must be bent slightly to restore a good connection. PS2 has the notorious "disk read error" that's happens all too often. That's not to say cartridge-based systems don't have problems. Original NES commonly has the pins becoming dirty and oxidizing. A lot of people's old NES's don't work anymore. I'd say if your SNES is still working, then you've been relatively fortunate. Sometimes a console just has a minor design flaw that affects long-term use. There's no way for a manufacturer to test for this. So alas, our DC's may all die someday. Crying or Very sad

lol, I don't think a DC would make it more than 2 steps and still work but thats just because of all the moving parts
