I've installed quake 3 arena, and set up my win server, and when I run the shortcut I get a quake 3 console telling me all the directories & stuff etc. Does this mean it works? It never runs the games but I know nothing bout servers! Question Question Question Neutral

Do you see a window with a blue screen? If so, then it is working.

There is no problem, your server is up and running if you are seeing that command prompt.

Are you not seeing the server in the master list with your Dreamcast?

Make sure you have whatever port your server is running on open in your routers port forwarding menu.

to connect using your pc you need a server browser like pingtool or all seeing eye:
http://www.udpsoft.com/

to check if your server is running you can type the command "heartbeat" into your servers blue console window, if everythings working it will tell you the name of the master server thats being pinged or it will say "server is not running" if theres a problem.

192.168.0.3 is your LOCAL ip address. Your computers IP on the local LAN.

For other users to access your server they need to know your current public IP address from your ISP. Which you can find from the following URL:

http://www.dslreports.com/whois/

Also be sure to open 27960 in your routers port forwarding menu, under the router administration panel.

Hi all,
I'm also pretty new here, i read the quake 3 tutorial, it just looks like the only way to get it work is to have the us version of quake 3 but also the original quake 3 game for PC. Have i misunderstood or do you need to have 2 versions of the games to run it from your DC ?
Since i got my BBA, i only enjoyed some hours playing on PSO, thanks to a crossover cable between my DC and my PC and very few settings, but i thought it was almost the same thing to Quake 3 but it looks like a bit longer and also more expensive Sad
Can someone clarify, i'd love to join you on line Wink

You have misunderstood. Here is the situation. The tutorial in question is for running your very own dedicated server to show up in the master list. On the Dreamcast Quake 3 is not a peer to peer game, in that you cannot actually host a game session from your Dreamcast. Quake 3 Arena for the Dreamcast relies on dedicated servers to play the game online.

If you want to just play Quake 3 Arena online, all you need is a US version of Quake 3. You can connect, and will be presented with the Master List, and a variety of dedicated servers already hosted by users. You can join these servers and play online.

So the tutorial is only if you wanted to host your very own Dreamcast dedicated server.

There are already plenty of servers already available to join and play. Also since you have a BBA, you should have a blast, as Quake 3 runs fantastic with it. If you do not already have the game, I highly recommend picking it up. Quake 3 Arena is a game that is online forever so your BBA will always be able to get some good use out of it.

I hope this information clarrified the situation for you.

Welcome to the website btw. Smile

Ok thanks this is quite clear now but i remember last time (may be 6 monthes ago Confused ) it managed to connect but there was no server listed at all, so i thought no server was on line..
I'll try again ;)

Well i've just tried again (with my us quake 3 version) and the console is connected then scanning internet and then i got a message saying : No response from Master server.
Does this mean that all servers are switched off at the moment and that i have to try later ?

Some people are unable to reach the master list. This often has to do with DNS complications. What are your DNS entries in your Dreamcast internet config currently set to?
