is it possible to use the microphone with quake online or do i need to use a keyboard?

You'll need to use the keyboard. The microphone for in-game use never really caught on as much as it should have. It started to show up in later titles (Propeller Arena) and was used in Alien Front Online. I'm sure if the system stuck around a little longer, more games would have made use of it.

Up until last month, I used to play quite often with a group of three guys in my neighborhood. We'd fire up MSN Messenger on our computers and simply use it's voice chat while we played dial-up Quake III. With a little finaggling, it worked like a charm.

I suppose that Skypecasts would probably be much easier, though.

Anyway, there's nothing like having realtime voice chat to talk smack with your friends when you plant a rocket in somebody.
