Well unfortunatly it seems that all of the dreamcast Unreal Tournament Servers except for 1 eight player max capacity server, were recently taken down. For good? Possibly. Probobly.
Onlineconsoles is currently working on petitioning for server software for various online DC titles. So that we can set up and run dreamcast online gaming servers. We are on borrowed time as it is. Seganet servers were supposedly only supposed to be up till end of 2k2. However the interesting thing is not ALL titles are hosted by sega...many are independent. So don't go thinking everything is gonna be shutdown or blah blah blah, and get in some wild panic. All we can do is enjoy the games while they are up, have fun, and play dreamcast online for as long as the options are available. Well I have been scoping things out over the past few days just keeping a close eye on most all the online games i own for DC.
The one UT server is still up and running, and is almost always packed with gamers. The Quake 3 servers now are swamped! Very good numbers, right now i just checked and there are over 30 people playing on DC Quake 3. With about 5 full games. So even thought most of UT is down. DC fraggers are all still here The quake 3 servers all are still around, and i don't think they are going anywhere since they are mostly independently hosted. And are not even connected to seganet. So the Quake3 servers should be safe and sound. |

Lord, I love your site. It's super quick!
I run the DCOG list and think we should tag team the "get servers from Sega" lobbying. I have pursued this with them in the past [last time they said they'd shut them all down] but no one had any info on who had what software. And I've started up with it again. Let's dialog via email as I have lots of experience with them and can tell you all I know. It doesn't look good but doesn't hurt to try. If you're interested in a community effort email me at wwjd@junglemate.com. If not, why, that's cool too. I'll be testing all the games again soon and will update the list if there are changes. WORST case: we can ALWAYS run Quake 3 servers from PCs. |

Word yea i think that by contacting the game publishers is the best bet...not seganet. Because the games that do have server input lines, such as Bomberman and Outtrigger, the server was most likely developed by the game developers using a developers kit recieved from sega. I feel as long as the source code is copywritten, that companies would feel secure to lend installations of the server software out to public use.
If not, many of these games will never be playable online again, unless someone with the knowledge and the skills were to hand code them, and compile them by tearing apart the dreamcast game itself. This is possible, but would require a team of peopel to do it. Seganet had already released open source primers on how seganet was developed to both sony and nintendo, to further the online console gaming market. Everything your seeing right now on Sony and Nintendo as far as online console gaming...is based entirely off of the core sega net gaming model. I think its more that sega feels its not worth their time to deal with it. They're dealing with the financial problems of Sega right now, which is pretty crazy. The Namco and Sammy merger fallouts really hurt the company, and Sega is looking for anyone to merge with right now. The sad part is Sega might be selling off a bunch of their most prized developers to microsoft. |

Nikon, can you confirm yourself if JGR and Samba De Amigo still function with their content or whatever? I can't check those
I've gotten no where gettign server software or info from anywhere. I give up. I do plan on getting ahold of 4x4 and Q3 and setting up servers for those someday, but with up speed of 128k on my cable, that should prove lame. |
||||
|
||||
128k is probably fine for 4 players or so
|
||||
128kbit divided by 8 is 16 kilobytes per second of upstream, he could run 1 or the other but not both. Plus cable modems fluctuate. We should be getting a quake 3 server setup at a colo, so its up all the time.
WWJD i just tested JGR the website content still works. |

Are you seriuos about Sega telling Sony and Nintendo how to base there network system off of seganet? I mean comon that is so unfair. Its not right, the DC owns the title of being the best online console out there but sega being all gay shutting down the servers. If we get the server software that would be great.

The servers cost money to run, and Sega are still in deep with financial problems. If they're not supporting the console anymore, why should they feel obliged to keep the console's servers up? Eventually, they'd have to take them down anyway - just be grateful that we still have some games to play. |

True to tell you how much they were in debt a modest estiment in 2001 was wll over 1 billion, not sure if that was true but with so many systems they made failing seems about right |

yeah, that blows | ||||
