Today, the Dreamcast turns seven years old. It's an odd number and not really much in terms of significant anniversaries (5 / 10 years), but I still think it's important.

Though, today, we don't celebrate just a number; instead, we celebrate the conception of a simple idea. We celebrate the resolve of Sega's persistence to, despite several failures and financial loss, bring us the most feature-rich, innovative, and entertaining console they could.

I don't think there have been many, if any, consoles that have still received studio quality / commercial release games seven years after being dropped by their parent company as the Dreamcast has. I'm not saying this to incite a "x console is better than x console" war; I just find it fascinating that companies are still interested in our console. Sure, they won't make as much as they might make on a console that is still supported, but they see what we see in the Dreamcast.

Finally, we must not forget that the Dreamcast isn't an entity unto itself. Today we celebrate the people who support the Dreamcast. The soul of the system doesn't lie within the system itself, but rather in each of us. To quote Soul Calibur, we're the reason its "soul still burns." Perhaps it's because we can all find something in the Dreamcast we can relate to. It's the (*insert preferred filler*) noodle soup of consoles.

Eh, enough babling from me / getting all gushy. Smile The Dreamcast doesn't want that. It wants us to pop in our favorite game and play.

Happy birthday, Dreamcast.

Never stop thinking.

I''ve been playing Daytona for the past half hour, and I plan on continuing my DC gaming well into the night. I've got a two-liter of Mountain Dew, a stack of games, and a clear schedule tomorrow.

Even though the Dreamcast was released in Japan and Europe at different times, the date 9/9/99 is seen as the primary celebratory birthday for the Dreamcast because of the numbers used in the date. They are all 9's, which are like swirls.

When referring to the entire lifespan of the Dreamcast the Japanese release date is the first date used.
