Basicly everytime I switch my DC off, one of my VMUs does the 'bleep' noise, and goes to the menu where I have to set the date and time on it.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks

It's possible that the battery is just going dead, but not completely dead yet.

i had a vmu like that i bought fresh batteries for it and yea it kept doing that everytime i shut off the dreamcast except mine didnt make a sound it just turned on, so the batteries died after like 3 or 4 days. who actually uses the vmu's standalone features anyways.

Change the DC's internal battery. It has nothing to do with the VMU.

Fairly sure. It's not that difficult a job - maybe get a friend to have a go if it's beyond you ?

Is changing the Dreamcast's internal battery like changing the saturns? Or does it require soldering?

It requires soldering. The battery has two metal leads soldered onto it and then that gets soldered directly to the board. See this picture I found for a reference.

You might want to go to Radio Shack and get one of those button-cell battery holders and put that in there so you don't have to resolder anything. Just open the case and pop in a new battery.

Another VMU (new) I bought from ebay arrived today and its not doing the bleep. So I think its just the batteries in the other VMU, or something else related to that VMU.

Just so nobody gets confused : The loud Beeep/Squeal you hear is the VMU battery needing replacement.

The Date/Time settings on screen are a result of the INTERNAL battery failing.

thats what i thought, and the dreamasts internal battery is rechargable which recharges while you play. it lasts for something like 2 weeks is why when you buy a used dreamcast it usually displays the date/time settings is cause you gotta recharge the battery by playing for at least 2 hours.

Well there's a message there - play your DC over and over !

In my experience, regarding charging the internal battery, it can charge and give you a good while longer or just die. Not unlike an automobile battery ?.

If a good session cures it then that's fine - no problem.
