Hey guys,
Im after some advice.
For the past 3/4 years I have played my DC through a CRT monitor wit ha VGA box adapter.
The thing is I am currently looking at buying a new TV for my room.
I read that using an old console such as a Dreamcast o na HD ready TV,
will delay the picture and make the controls slightly delayed.

The thing is the new TV i am getting is a 20" Samsung and it has Scart and VGA inputs.
I was wondering if i still used my VGA box to link my DC to this new TV
and plugged it in through the VGA port if the picture would still delay?

Its Quite a dilema because all new TV's are HD ready now,
and I would really like a HD tv for the quality picture,
But if it fucks up my Dreamcasts picture then I will have to still use it on a CRT monitor.
Thing is most CRT monitors don't get any bigger than like 19".
I was wondering if i used a LCD slim PC monitor if it would be ok with my DC....

Arggg im in a bit of a situation.

Anyway any advice would be nice,
peace, lozz.

LCD computer monitors are really only fit for displaying its native resolution. The Dreamcast outputs 640x480 which has to be scaled by the monitor. Computer LCD monitors usually don't do a very good job at scaling, compared to LCD TVs. The HD ready will have to upscale the picture too, but will generally do a much better job than a computer LCD screen.

There's no such thing as a lagfree HDTV, the question is if the lag is noticable to you. Feeding a HDTV with VGA should produce less lag than an interlaced signal such as composite, s-video or RGB scart.

mine supports it fine, but I looked for one that could do a decent output on low res
I remember asking the same question here a long time ago, & got a very technical, but good answer from one of the guys
the post should still be somewhere on the board

edit: I found it, read the last entry by Einhander

UURghh you know what this all just gets too technical and makes you want to give up. I bought a Hanns G cheap ass 22" monitor exact same as this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HannsG-22-Widescreen-LCD-TFT-Monitor-22inch-VGA-HDMI_W0QQitemZ160229618386QQih Z006QQcategoryZ174QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I hooked it up last night and played Maximum pool on it with Segadreamcaster which does not look that good to be honest but I think thats mainly cus the image is still a lot and you can just sit and pick fault with it. Besides that Ive not read the manual and didnt try adjusting anything. After I played AFO which I must say looked fecking amazing and I couldent notice any lag at all. I previously tried VGA on my old CRT monitor and whilst it looked good I had to turn the brightness up to 100% cus the black was just well very black, my LCD monitor didnt have this problem at all. Seemed great to me on the 22" LCD monitor so thats what I'll be sticking with.

A ton has also been said about HDTV lag in the following thread:

Another consideration is you need to have a CRT for lightgun games.
