Its either my Dreamcast loves me or what i've done has mucked something up.
I recently downloaded Quake 3 arena (US) so i can finally get back online, and i also downloaded Uptopia so i could run the game, Utopia didn't work so i left it for a little while whilst trying to find Starlancer on ebay. I renamed the Quake 3 disc accidently and ran it on my Dreamcast which is PAL, and some how it worked.

Is this possible?

My guess would be that the torrent or whatever you used was mis labeled.

The Quake 3 disc was setup as self booting. When you used the Utopia disc before hand it probobly screwed things up preventing the game from loading properly since it was already setup to self boot.

Its a backup with autoboot, this eliminates the import issue, basically making the backup region free
