I won't comment in-depth on this until I have seen more gameplay. Kingbuzzo probobly knows where I would be headed with my opinions at the moment (euroshmup).

Just so people don't think I am being overly negative too soon, even RHE (a develooper on Fast Striker) referenced euroshmup in the topic of the thread at shmups.

For those who don't know, euroshmup is a term for shooters that stray very far from the japanese formula. They can suffer from things such as random enemy generation, poor enemy placement (or not enough enemies), and poor collision detection; but one of the biggest culprits is having a life meter or shield that allows you to take damage.

Like I said its hard for me to comment until I see more footage of the game. The video so far is just all glitz and glitter without any extended play or enemy barrages to get a sense for how the gameplay or powerup system works.

("Award Trophy System" has me worried....)
(16 Levels also has me worried...)

There's no question, this beast is a euroshmup and proud of it.

But the term 'Euroshmup' isn't considered an insult imo. The days of european kids playing shmups on their amigas are long gone and many are heavily influenced by both that legacy, and Japanese arcade shmups.

These days you'll find games coming out of Europe that have elements that make Japanese shmups great, but with a euro approach in ways like a health bar. more than 6 stages etc.

Rafael Dyll brings up some good points on this in the Racketboy Podcast

Even though you can't see much of the game in that video, from what I can see it looks more visually pleasing that NG:DEV team's games so far. What I mean is: When I play DUX or Last Hope I find the background hard to differentiate from the foreground. The two seem to merge together too much. Its hard to explain really.

Not sure whether to order this or Fast Striker. The advantage of indy releases before, such as ones from Goat was that they were relatively cheap. Even W&W and R4, which are both fantastic releases and must have had a lot of time spent on them only cost €20 each. I don't see how they can justify a €35 price tag for this game. Then they will probably release a deluxe, super-deluxe, "rinse your bank account" deluxe edition etc. etc.

Apart from that, don't get me wrong, love to see new releases on the DC. I just hope that they spend plenty of time on preperation. A location test like they are doing with fast striker would be good.

Well NGDEV makes neo geo games so there's no question that this 640x480 2.5d shmup will be more visually pleasing than a 320x224 2d shmup made for 1990 hardware. Of course that might also be a matter of taste :p

Also, I can't stand any of the goat releases, and we should make it clear that they had nothing to do with W&W or R4, that was redspotgames. I'd would sooner spend my whole paycheck on 8 copies Fast striker LE and Sturmwind super duper deluxe edtition before I spend $15 on some crappy lumines or mahjong clone.

You're right though, we've already seen what can happen when there isn't enough effort put into location tests. I'm hopeful that the flaws of yesterday's releases caused enough of a stir to make sure every new release gets extensive testing.

I'm not sure if you'll see this title in a Japanese arcade though, the cave fans will show up with torches and pitchforks :p

I get the feeling this game is using pre-rendered backgrounds.

Waiting to see more of it. It looks nice enough, but it's not really fair to judge it from the stuff that's been released. Why they haven't put a proper vid on youtube yet is sillies.
