I`d like to read game guides without having to switch on to a computer. Is that possible?

Sure, you can do that. You will have to save your game, switch discs, read the guide, then switch discs again and load your saved game. If you're ok with that, you can use homebrew software like Dream Explorer to read the txt files.
I'm not sure if you'll have to compile your own Dream Explorer CD with all the txt files you need (probably not necessary), or if you can have a Dream Explorer CD and another CD where you burn new txt guides as you need them (this is most likely). |

What is the text file display like on Dream Explorer? Hopefully gray text on a black background (as its best for TV's).

Picture I found of text display
I dont mind changing discs its better than having to turn my old laptop on and off everytime I get stuck in some game [/img] I`m currently experimenting with it lets see if you have to compile it |

That's pretty clean and easy to read. I didn't know text files could be read, I had never thought of it.

I followed the instructions on the dream explorer website and compile a cd just need to test in my dreamcast and see what happens

Sorry for replying late, but yeah, that's how it looks, black text on a light gray background. I just tried it on a 26" 4:3 CRT and it's easy on the eyes. You can use the D-pad or the triggers to move through the text at different speeds so you can quickly get to the part you need to read.
Btw, once you've loaded Dream Explorer you can remove the CD (Dream Explorer won't close) and put another one in, then select "Refresh". So you don't need to compile all your FAQs at once on the same CD where Dream Explorer is, it's ok to have another CD where you burn new txt files as you need them. Also, one piece of advice if you plan on using any of the (pretty neat) VMU functions (such as backing up an entire VMU to a PC via coder's cable, or defragmenting it); be careful if you still play certain online RPG because it will notice you've done something "non-official" to your VMU and delete your save. I learned this the hard way |
