Any requirements on play time so we stay at the same level more or less?

I actually wont make it after all. Remember when we didn't have to work and just played Dreamcast all day? Me neither.

I still really want to do this though.

Here's some of my comments for my Armada play through before and after playing the game. Here's the previous information I knew before playing the game. Armada is a 4 player space RPG shooter. Some have compared it to Asteroids. They would be pretty close if you ask me. I almost got a Gauntlet Legends vibe while gathering information about it. Dreamcast IGN gave the game a 9.1 (out of 10) on 12-2-99 saying the game was a sleeper hit on the Dreamcast. The Videogame critic gave the game a F saying the game was garbage. After hearing conflicting reports the game definitely had my interest. The IGN review reported Armada having VGA compatibility (yes), was developed through Windows CE (eh), and was originally developed as an online title but since the Sega network wasn't up the online play was scrapped.
Now after all the information I scooped here's my means of playing the game. I have my Dreamcast hooked up to a 32 inch Vizio with the standard audio video cables. The copy I have is a ripped copy through Alcohol 120 or DiscJuggler. Also my copy is not self bootable and needed assistance from the utopia boot disc.

I've played some Armada. And wow. Here's some of the stuff I noticed and wrote down. The game had a pretty nice intro video for a game being 15 years old (!). After boot up its nice to see that anyone can save off any VMU off any controller. I had the option of picking from 6 characters. The characters/races are Terran, Nomad, Eldred, Scarab, Drakken, and Vorgan. I picked the Terran for this adventure. After filling in my name your adventure starts off with an attack on your home planet. It was definitely a nice way to start off without the game babying or holding your hand. Afte the initial attack and with some helpful advice from your AI companions about the controls. It was time to set off. I thought it was a pretty nice feature of the game to support voice acting for your AI companions. After leaving the planet, your welcomed to the universe. The scope of things is pretty intense. Your the green dot on the map. And similar to an Alien movie you see a cluster of red dots cluster and around your ship. I was pretty lucky that a nearby friendly ship (that looked like a millenuim falcon) gave a helping hand because the game features a leaving RPG system. And being a level 2 I got smacked around. In normal level grinding fashion the more stuff you destroy the more credits you get to buy the gear you need to kick ass. I played the game for over an hour and bought an item to increase my shooting projectiles. I've been pretty impressed with the game so far. You can return to your home planet at any time to restock on armor and bombs for free. You pick up credits for killing enemies and doing escort missions. Its a shame because this game kind of screams multiplayer and online would've did wonders for it but offline works just as well. Saves require 6 blocks. Thatsnmy two cents for our first community play and my first semi review.

This did officially start! Wargo started it on the 10th Wink

OC had some technical work with regards to security on the forums that had to be done. This involved some emergency fixes and I wasn't able to login until I after I completed this work. Sorry I was AWOL, but the Armada Community Play is currently active and running.

If you are interested in playing, please create a new character with a new save and start your single player excursion through Armada! I will be sharing the start of my game with everyone this weekend (I have a 4 day weekend, with vacation from work, so expect me to be participating).

So please start playing everyone, and share! Very Happy

I have finally started my save. I am a "Scarab" class, and my char's name is Torvus. Its going to be rough starting out this new save, as I was a very high level in my last save. So its going to take some time getting used my craft being so week. I guess its time to start leveling up and taking out some Armada scum!

Update: Okay so I am now Level 9

Experience: 4759

I have 4 ultra tech on my ship:

  1. Defense Booster (Increase Shield Strength)
  2. Shot Splitter (Increase the number of shots fired)
  3. Power Chamber (Detect Ultratech at Long Range and Increase Energy Max)
  4. Energy Cycler (Increase Energy Regen Rate)

I have only completed my first mission, and I am now on mission 2.

The Scarab ship has a 3 way shot multi-directional fire. This can take some getting used to, but it is good for panning around enemies while firing.

I am now Level 11, and I have completed 3 missions.

I have been trying to gather ultra-tech from enemy ships using "Detect Ultratech at Long Range" and another to increase my chances to salvaging ultratech from enemy ships, but I simply cannot figure out how this works. I have been flying around for hours and I don't see how you are supposed to detect the ultratech. Guides on gamefaqs aren't proving to be of any help.

If anyone else hasn't started their save yet, JOIN IN!

Since I became aware of this game here in OC (it was never released in Europe) that I was interested in playing it. So decided to take this opportunity to join this community play by playing Armada Smile .

I decided to pick the Eldred character race to play, since no one was using it right now. And named it: Star.

I’ve played for about 1 hour and my experience so far was very close to what Wargo described in his post.

Looks like my class has unlimited Warp Engines (turbo) so I’m getting used to abuse that power when moving my ship and when I want to retreat so I can replenish my Armor and Power Pods at the Home Planet. But that may not be very good if someday I decided to play with other class Razz .

Speaking of replenish at the Home Planet, I’ve done a lot of that, not only because when we go outside the planet the enemies are very strong and so some grinding is necessary to get a better ship and money to buy upgrades, but also because I have some questions about the amount of lives we have. When I lost 1 live when battling our 2nd objective (the 1st at space) and saw the indicator telling me that I had 2 lives remaining, I decide to take more care about the Armor indicator. So every time I see the Armor low I go replenish it.

After I’ve played I decided to take a good look at the manual and they say not to worry if our ship is destroyed because we don’t lose anything and are not penalized! So if that’s true, it means we have unlimited lives? Or what happens when we lose the 3 lives we have at the beginning?

It’s good that we encounter some friendly ships that can help us fighting the enemy when we leave the planet but every time we go in and outside the Home Planet the map resets, it seems. Because I was afraid to lose the lives it made things a bit more difficult especially when some bigger friendly ships asked for escort as they go a bit far from our initial position but they give us some good credits when we complete it.

I have level 5 now and only got 550+ credits so far, so couldn’t buy any new upgrade yet as the price of upgrades start at 800 to more credits. Sometimes it’s hard to collect the items dropped by the enemies ships that are destroyed especially if we are on the move like in an escort mission or when in some occasions many enemies ships appear and we have to retreat making it impossible to search the debris. I would have been better if we could collect items by just flying over it.

I’ve enjoyed the experience so far, even though the beginning is a bit difficult because there’s no tutorial, and it has the potential to grow the interest as we progress. I’m also a fan of space adventures so this is a plus.

If you die the only penalty is that you are sent back to your home world, and a death is added to your death count on your save file. This can be seen when you select your character at bootup. I think I have 17 deaths racked up on my save so far because I am constantly pushing the envelope by flying down to an enemy planet, and getting completly raped in the process. "Let's see if I am powerful enough... oh no... oh god... NOPE! lol"

Going on excort missions is a great way to earn credits and EXP. Not only do you get a reward from the mission, but Amarda ships constantly bombard the collective of ships. However, instead of riding solo, the other targets draw them away from you, so you take less damage. Plus their offensive capabilities help out immensly. I have also notiiced that at the end of the escort misson, a decent amount of ships are attracted to your location.

When you collect credits from destroyed ships, you can either fly right over the credit to pick it up, or use your scanning beam to collect the credit.

An important thing to note is that the entire story takes place by talking ships on your home planet. So be sure to talk to a few people each time you return home.

What are your thoughts on the games overall atmosphere?

I have played a few more hours and have now 9 hours+ total.

Thanks for letting me know about the penalty for losing all 3 lives, as it didn't happen so far to me and I was wondering. I’ve been playing very carefully so far.

Yes, escort missions are very good. A good way to do them is just stay close to the big friendly ship and just shoot what you can and don't bother to pick the credits that the enemy ships drop. This way we don't lose much armor and are able to do it faster. At the end of the mission we are reward with a good amount of credits so the few that are dropped by the armada ships doesn't really matter.

The red crosses we see in the map are from those jellyfish type of ships that when destroyed they drop armor repair, so when we have low armor it’s good to check for some in the map. They are very easy to destroy and usually they fly alone.

Another good way to make Money in the game is to buy food or construction materials at the star base just near on the side of the Home Planet and then sell it at the other star bases or friendly planets.

Yeah I always try to talk with everyone at the Home Planet when I complete a mission. They also use to give some coordinates to other planets or places we can explore.

It’s easy to see that the game was made with the focus on the multiplayer, but it’s still very good playing alone. Maybe this reminds me a bit of PSO with the offline/online aspect of the game. Where we can play to complete some missions but also explore the world as we want to level up and getting more money and better equipment, because there’s always enemy ships appearing.

I finally figured something out that has been messing with me for ages. The "Destroyed" kill count, and why it is different on the save and character screens. I am the only one playing, so why is the kill count different? Well, the character kill count is how many armada ships your character has destroyed. The save kill count is higher, because it totals all of the ships destroyed anywhere in space in your save. So if you are on an escore mission, or your "buddy" helper ship comes along, any ships that they destroy add to the total.
