Yes there is a region lock on the Saturn. However there is a very novel solution for this, and that is the an import boot cart that slides into the RAM cart slot in the back. You simply put it in, and it will boot imports. No disc swapping required
Buy the Action Replay 4M Auto Plus: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-k8-49-en-70-1b2.html You can backup saves to this cart, as well as use Action Replay codes already stored on the cart. It can also be used for many of the import fighting games that required an additional RAM cart. Just be sure to leave it sitting in the console at all times. Don't yank it in and out constantly. The connector board is much thicker than the Sega carts, and thus causes the prongs inside to spread out wider. If you leave it sitting in your saturn most of the time, you will be just fine and shouldn't ever have any problems. Also don't pull it in and out while the console is on. I own one of these myself and they are truly awesome. Well worth the money! |

If you're a little more technical minded you can install a region switch on the Saturn. http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=imports:sega_saturn
I did this many years ago and can't find the guide I used but this one has plenty of pictures and seemed pretty thorough. I didn't like the idea of widening my cartridge slot since I regularly use official peripherals like the memory card, ram cart and occasionally the netlink. |

One of the advantages that the Action Replay 4M cart has, is that it has actual Flash Memory on the cart. Which means the data is more or less perminantly stored on there, as opposed to say some of the official Sega carts that simply used a larger battery based save cart. There is the HSS-0138 from Japan, but I can't find any information on what type of storage solution it uses. Anyone know more on this?
Unfortunatly, aside from installing a region switch, or buying a Japanese Saturn, there isn't any other way to run imports on a Saturn besides going with an unlicensed import boot cart like the Action Replay 4M. EDIT: I also just opened up my ST-Key Converter (a cart that only boots imports), Action Replay 4M, and my Netlink. I compared the thickness in the boards, and all 3 were identical. The only difference was that the lip on the AR4M was flat, whereas the NetLink and ST-Key had a rounded edge to it. Here are some other information links I found: http://www.shinforce.com/saturn/information/Cartridges.htm http://sega.jp/archive/segahard/ss/memory.html Any other research and or information would be appreciated! |

On the outside they are identical besides the color of the cartridge. I can't find my star-bit thing-a-ma-jig to open it up at the moment so I can't look for a battery. Interestingly though only the box it came in says HSS-0138, the cartridge says 670-5847. |
