Hi all,

Been meaning to get this setup for a while and finally got around to it today.

I followed all the instructions in the guides section and the only thing that I have a slight discrepancy with is that I do not have the "pak1.pk3" file?

Anyway, done all the rest and the server runs ok, but despite my attempts to open port 27960, which it says is my local host, I can't seem to get any joy.

annoyingly I am behind two linksys routers, I think I have managed to open the port on the one but when I do it on the other the settings don't seem to stick, its just says successful but when I go back the settings appear to be gone?

Anyway, any ideas/advice wouold be appreciated

Cheers, Craig

PS: The routers I am using are: Linksys: BEFSR41 and Linksys: WRT54GS

UPDATE:

OK, well strangely I have just tried to run the server without either of the routers and it still doesnt show up in the master list Sad hmmm...any ideas you more experienced Quake server operators? Smile

Oh and by the way the PC I am using does not have a firewall installed either

That might be a problem as quake might not detect your version as being 1.16, as 1.16n needs these files.
First thing id do is make sure you have installed the 1.16n pointrelease correctly, you can do this by starting quake and then pulling down the console window (the pointrelease version is shown at the bottom right of the console window in yellow).

If its says version 1.16n then its installed, but without the pak files it might be corrupt, i would check and re-install 1.16n patch.
so next would be to allow port forwarding of port 27960.
or you could try another port, maybe 27950.

If you post your ip address and port number i will add it to my favorites list, that way i can scan it if it broadcasts online.

Ah well, I cant actually load the game as it has some kind of error with openGL, probably a case of the GFX card being a bit useless an unable ti run it..lol...the PC is about 10 years old after all, so I have no way (that I know of) to check it using that method.

I have since re-installed the update and the file still isnt there..anymore ideas?

Another way you can test if you have 1.16n patch installed is to start the server up, then when you get the blue server screen hit the copy button and then paste the contents into a text file.

The very first line in the text file should tell you what patch you have installed.
for example, mine say:
Q3 1.16h win-x86 Feb 17 2000

Were did you install the patch?

it should be installed into your quake 3 arena directory, not the baseq3 folder.

Hi,

OK, yeah didnt notice that before..think it sright then, mine reads:

Q3 1.16n win-x86 Mar 14 2000

Exactly the same other than the date, and yes I am installing it into the Quake 3 Arena directory.

Then it must be your routers blocking the port, but i dont know much about how to configure the type of router you have.

the port forwarding on my router (belkin) is setup like this:

Description "Quake III"
Inbound port "27950 - 27950"
Type "UDP"
Private ip address "192.168.2.2"
Private port "27950 - 27950"

then i just tick the enable box and choose apply changes.

I dont know if thats going to be any help to you, but its the best that i can think of.

ok, well thatnk for ur help...unfortunately though, its not the router causing the problem entirely, because it doesnt work even when I remove both routers and connect directly, so something is still going wrong on the PC itself, but I just cant work out what, still get the feeling its that missing file...perhaps someone could sne dit ot me via msn or email or upload it or something and try it that way? I dunno Confused

There shouldnt be a pak1.pk3 in 1.16n pointrelease! 1.17 adds a pak1.pk3 and pak3.pk3 !

Clean 1.11-1.16 install should look likt his.

-baseq3
-pak0.pk3 (479.493.658 Bytes)
-pak2.pk3 (7.511.182 Bytes)
-Extras (not required)
quake3.exe

yep, i only have pak0.pk3 and pak2.pk3.

pak0.pk3 is the most importent file becouse it holds all of the infomation that quakes .exe needs to start the game, like models, textures etc...

i would recommend a complete re-install of quake and the 1.16 patch.

Hi,

OK, this is what I have:

baseq3:

- dc-mappack.pk3
- ffa.cfg
- pak0.pk3
- pak2.pk3
- q3config.cfg
- segapak.pk3

Extras

Quake3.exe

seems I have a few extra files in the baseq3 directory, but they are needed arent they for a DC server?

Ok that seems to all be correct, next you have to add a command line from the quake3 shortcut on your desktop.

Right click the shortcut and choose properties,
next click on the shortcut tab and you will see a box named "Target" (thats the command line to start quake).
add the following to the end of the command line:

+set dedicated 2 +set net_port 27960 +exec ffa.cfg

for example, i have my quake directory in c:\quake3 so my command line would be:

C:\quake3\quake3.exe +set dedicated 2 +set net_port 27960 +exec ffa.cfg

That should start a server using windows provided you have edited your ffa.cfg with all your server setting (server name etc...)

also, i noticed lordnikon has "+exec ffa1.cfg" in his server setup tutorial but when you go to download that file its named ffa.cfg (not ffa1.cfg). Laughing

ok, when I try to add that to the target, it just tells me its not valid Question

Also the ffa.cfg file, what needs editing? the only thing I have changed so far is the server name at the top? All the rest is just server preferences isnt it, that I can worry about later? I hope..lol
